In November 2023, Germany will be reviewed under the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) procedure of the United Nations Human Rights Council on the human rights situation in the country. In this procedure, the Human Rights Council calls on all states in a four-year cycle to report on the human rights policy in the nation.
NGOs have the opportunity to submit their own reports, either individual or collective, in advance of the review. In an individual report, KOK highlighted developments and gaps in the fight against trafficking in human beings and, in particular, in the protection of trafficked persons. This was based on the recommendations of the Human Rights Council from the last round of reviews in 2018. In addition, KOK participated in a joint report of the Forum Menschenrechte.
Based on the reports, an interactive dialogue will then take place at the Human Rights Council in Geneva between a working group of the 47 member states of the Human Rights Council and the representatives of the state under review. The comments and recommendations for improving the human rights situation in the reviewed state are then summarized in a report by the working group. The state under review must take a position on the recommendations; it can accept them or reject them.
